Mobile Health Technology Development

Consumers are using their mobile phones in new ways. More
consumers are sending and receiving text and email messages, taking pictures, playing games and accessing the
internet while mobile.
This represents tremendous opportunity for healthcare delivery,
health plans, employers and healthcare technology companies to "meet consumers where they are" and influence their
health related decisions and behaviors.
Why are companies investing in Mobile Health? Healthcare companies are aggressively investing in mobile health technologies to: - impact the
consumer's health behaviors through this cost effective channel
- guide consumers to make better health decisions
- influence
hard to reach consumer segments such as minorities and adolescents
- track and (remote) monitor the consumer's physical
and mental health
- extend support to consumers from their social network, physician or health coach
Which are the key consumer segments to target with mobile health?
According to the Mobile
Access 2010 Report from Pew Research, certain consumer segments are more active users of mobile. "African-Americans and English-speaking Latinos continue to be among the most
active users of the mobile web". African-Americans and Latinos are more likely to own a mobile phone than whites
(87% vs. 80%) and "minority cell phone owners take advantage of a much greater range of their phones’ features"
such as texting, emailing and using the internet. Young
adults (ages 18-29) are actively using mobile data applications. These young adults are "sending or receiving text
messages (95%), sending photos or videos to others (81%) and accessing the internet on their
mobile device (65%)." Pew Research's Teens & Mobile Phone study
found that "75% of 12-17 year-olds now own cell phones" and "54% text daily" to remain connected with
their friends.
Don't miss the opportunity to develop and pilot mobile health initiatives for these target
consumer segments.
